Project Syllabus

Overview: What Type of Project to Choose, What to Include in Your Proposal and Report Format Standards

1. Type of Project to Select

  • Application Development – Build a desktop, web, or mobile app.
  • Projects can include applications that perform CRUD operations (Create, Read, Update, Delete).
  • Appropriate CASE tools should be used during development.
  • Students may choose projects like:
    • Information Systems (e.g., student management system)
    • E-Commerce portals
    • Game applications
    • Any other suitable application based on their project idea.
  • Avoid over-reliance on APIs or plugins; write your own modules when possible.

2. Proposal Structure (What to Include)

This section explains in detail what your project proposal must contain:

2.1 Cover Page and Introduction

  • Cover Page:
  • Table of Contents:
    • List all chapters and major sections with page numbers.

2.2 Problem Statement

  • Purpose: Clearly state the main problem you want to solve.
  • What to write:
    • Current problems in the existing system (like manual work, errors, etc.).
    • Who faces these problems (target users).
    • Why it is important to solve this issue.
  • Example: “Currently, the company stores data on paper files, causing delays and data loss risks.”

2.3 Objectives

  • Purpose: List what you want to achieve with the project.
  • What to write:
    • Main Objective: Overall goal starting with To
    • Specific Objectives: At least 3 detailed goals, each starting with To
  • Example:
    • To develop a web-based student attendance management system.
    • To automate the attendance recording process.
    • To allow teachers to view attendance reports.

2.4 Methodology

  • Purpose: Explain how you will develop the project.
  • What to include:

a) Requirement Identification

  • Describe the current system and its drawbacks.
    • List functional requirements (features) and non-functional requirements (like security, usability).

b) Feasibility Study

  • Check if the project is possible technically, operationally, and economically.

c) High-Level Design

  • Show a simple system flowchart, diagram, or workflow steps (e.g., user login → validation → dashboard).

2.5 Tools and Technologies Used

  • Purpose: List the software, programming languages, frameworks, and hardware you will use in the project.
  • What to write:
    • Frontend: HTML, CSS, JavaScript (for user interface and client-side functionality).
    • Backend: Any programming language or framework you know (e.g., PHP, Python, Java, Node.js).
    • Database: MySQL or other database systems (e.g., PostgreSQL, MongoDB).
    • Frameworks/Libraries (Optional): Bootstrap, React, jQuery, etc.
    • Development Tools: Visual Studio Code, Sublime Text, Git/GitHub, Postman.
    • Platforms: Web browsers, Android devices (if mobile app), local or cloud server.
    • Documentation Tools: MS Word (for project documentation and report writing).
    • Design Tools: Figma (UI/UX design), Draw.io (flowcharts, ER diagrams, system architecture).

Note: You are free to use any tools and technologies based on your skills and project requirements.

2.6 Expected Outcome

  • Purpose: Describe what your project will deliver.
  • What to write:
    • Final product (e.g., “A mobile app for food ordering.”)
    • Benefits to users.
    • How it improves the current system.
  • Tip: Be realistic; avoid overpromising.

2.7 References

  • Purpose: Credit the sources you used.
  • What to write:
    • List books, articles, websites, etc. in IEEE format.

3. Report Format Standards

  • Page Numbering:
  • Roman numerals (i, ii, iii…) from certificate to list of tables/figures.
  • Numeric (1, 2, 3…) from Chapter 1 onwards.
  • Bottom center position.
  • Page Size & Margins:
  • A4 paper, Top = 1″, Bottom = 1″, Right = 1″, Left = 1.25″.
  • Paragraph Style:
  • Justified text, 1.5 line spacing.
  • Font:
  • Times New Roman, size 12 for paragraphs.
  • Headings:
  • Chapter Title: 16 (bold)
  • Section: 14 (bold)
  • Sub-section: 12 (bold)
  • Figures & Tables:
  • Center-aligned.
  • Figure captions: below figure, bold, size 12.
  • Table captions: above table, bold, size 12.
